At the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, the red carpet showed not only its true color but also its reputation as a vehicle for elegant, over-the-top and even political fashion. Though there were bright moments — Cynthia Erivo’s dress was a “Wicked” shade of green, Taylor Zakhar Perez wore powder blue Prada — many of the gowns and tuxedos that graced the carpet were black. Some stars’ ensembles harked back to attire they wore at prior Oscars ceremonies. Sparkling brooches were among the most visible accessories on both men and women, as were tiny red pins calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. The Israel-Hamas war also influenced action off the carpet, with protests taking place as celebrities were arriving at the ceremony.

Does your dog need a coat?

Miuccia Prada, currently American Vogue’s pioneering septuagenarian cover girl, was standing backstage after the Prada show, bedecked in emeralds and jade and looking slightly terrified as Emma Watson and hordes of well-wishers and journalists swarmed around her like locusts. Such is life when you transcend the role of designer and become more like a divining rod that indicates which way the cultural water is flowing. TikTok's latest financial trend, "loud budgeting," can be as simple as saying "Hey, I don't want to spend money right now," Lukas Battle explained on CNBC's "Power Lunch." Battle, a comedian and writer who first coined the term loud budgeting, said his idea has been largely met with relief, which is why it has proved popular. Alternatively, "loud budgeting'" is centered around the everyday person, or the "average Joe," according to Battle's viral TikTok video. "It's not 'I don't have enough,' it's 'I don't want to spend,'" Battle added. In that way, loud budgeting is "it's almost more chic, more stylish, more of a flex."
